Overview
Arizona defines a homeschool as “a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent, guardian or other person who has custody of the child or nonpublic instruction provided in the child’s home” (A.R.S. §15-802(G)(2)). Homeschools are handled by county school superintendents.
Notice
Within 30 days of starting, file an affidavit of intent with your county school superintendent (A.R.S. §15-802(B)(2), (C)). The affidavit gives the child’s name and date of birth, the school address, and the custodians’ names, phone numbers and addresses. It is filed once, unless homeschooling ends and later resumes; if homeschooling ends, notify the county school superintendent within 30 days (A.R.S. §15-802(B)–(C)). Within 30 days you must also provide a certified birth certificate or other reliable proof of the child’s identity and age (A.R.S. §15-828(B)). The Maricopa County School Superintendent’s office states the affidavit must be notarized.
Families using an Empowerment Scholarship Account do not file a homeschool affidavit (Maricopa County School Superintendent).
Subjects
Reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies and science (A.R.S. §15-802(A)).
Compulsory attendance
Ages 6 to 16. If a child is under 8 by September 1, the custodian may file an affidavit stating they do not wish to begin homeschool instruction yet (A.R.S. §15-802(B)(3)).
